Hate Crime Fund Offers £1,000 Grants

TAMESIDE Council’s community safety team has launched a hate crime fund to coincide with National Hate Crime Awareness Week (October 8 to 15).

Grants of up to £1,000 are now available to projects across the borough that raise awareness of hate crime and what it is, change behaviour and perceptions, and increase the reporting of incidents.

Hate crime is defined as any criminal offence perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a personal characteristic.

In Greater Manchester the offence is monitored across six strands: race, religion, sexual orientation, trans-identity, disability and alternative subcultures.

Priority will be given to innovative projects which show an awareness of more than one strand of hate crime and which result in a product that can be reused. This could be awareness resources such as posters, film clips, music, artwork, presentation materials, or research documents and findings.

Cllr Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council’s executive member for towns and communities, said: “This is the third year the scheme has been running. As it has proved to be very popular in previous year, I hope to see many applications as, despite our continuing efforts, we still need to raise awareness of hate crime which remains significantly under-reported.

“We want groups and organisations to get the message out on how to challenge hate crime in our communities and to instil confidence in victims by highlighting how and where incidents can be reported.”

Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 28.
